| Last Updated: June 28, 2021

With severe climatic changes, people all over the globe rely on one or more HVAC installations to keep them comfortable. Even now, the temperatures are dropping rapidly, and soon it will be that time of year when you will look towards your reliable heating system to keep you warm and cozy. One such heating system is a furnace.

A furnace is a device that heats up the air and blows it through the vents to create a warm and comfortable environment. It is a primary source of heat that distributes heat evenly throughout the place of installation.

This article will tell you about some of the best furnaces manufactured by a well-known brand, Comfortmaker.

Who is Comfortmaker?

Comfortmaker is a subsidiary of Carrier. Both belong to the same parent company, International Comfort Products (ICP). It falls in the same category as Bryant, Day & Night, Heil, etc. The brand is a well-known name in the HVAC market. Its ACs and furnaces are some of the most long-running ones.

It offers one of the best warranty coverages over the entire range. Many of its units deliver highly efficient service thanks to the Energy Star certification they have received. They are not only affordable but also very efficient. In fact, Comfortmaker is an effective mid-range option for anyone who is looking to purchase a new heating or cooling system.

What Makes Comfortmaker Furnaces Stand Out From the Competition?

Comfortmaker is known for producing high-quality furnaces. Not only do the comprehensive warranty and efficient performance make them stand out from the competition, but Comfortmaker made sure to integrate some exclusive features and technologies to set it apart from the competition.

The Ion™ System Control is a remote WiFi-operated system that gives you complete control of a Comfortmaker furnace. You can easily regulate it from any part of the world for better efficiency, which, in turn, saves you money.

Its RPJ®(Rigid Press Joint) Heat Exchanger with an aluminized steel design smartly captures the additional heat produced by the system to improve efficiency.

Comfortmaker goes an additional step to offer different levels of coverage to match your investment. For example, even on its lowest-tier, Performance® Series, it offers a limited 20-year warranty on the heat exchanger as well as a limited ten-year warranty on parts.

Comparison Overview

Comfortmaker is a strong player in today’s HVAC market. It produces efficient and long-lasting heating and cooling systems, especially furnaces. They really are worth every penny that buyers spend on them. Let’s see how Comfortmaker furnaces compare to the units of some other brands.

Comfortmaker vs. Lennox Furnace

Lennox is one of the oldest furnace makers in America. It is known for producing quiet furnaces with variable blower motors. Let’s compare and contrast it with Comfortmaker.

Similarities

The product line of both brands can be classified into three categories. Each tier is available at a different price-point. They boast quality construction with long-lasting parts used in their manufacturing.

Differences

Lennox prides itself on the highest percentage of proprietary parts, but that also contributes to parts shortage and repair delays. Comfortmaker is better at dealing with these issues. Also, the warranty coverage that the latter offers on some of its units is the best. This Lennox cannot keep up with.

Comfortmaker vs. Trane Furnace

Trane is a brand of American Standard. It produces great heating and cooling units. Let’s see how its furnaces compare with those manufactured by Comfortmaker.

Similarities

Both companies manufacture furnaces that are highly efficient and generate higher BTUs. The two also offer a ten-year limited warranty on parts.

Differences

Trane lets you transfer the warranty to a future owner, which Comfortmaker does not allow. It also allows you to purchase a warranty that covers the cost of labor and parts. But, from the price point of view, Comfortmaker is a more affordable option.

Comfortmaker Furnace vs. Carrier

Carrier is a well-known name in the HVAC industry. It is a highly preferred choice for HVAC solutions. Here is a comparison overview of both Carrier and Comfortmaker.

Similarities

Both Carrier and Comfortmaker belong to International Comfort Products (ICP). The units they produce have high SEER ratings. This means they are very efficient and don’t increase your energy bills. Their units are some of the quietest in the industry.

Differences

Comfortmaker furnaces are the more durable of the two. Plus, furnaces by Carrier are relatively expensive.

Ducane Furnace vs. Comfortmaker

Ducane Furnace (Photo credit: highperformancehvac.com)

Ducane is a sub-brand from Lennox and offers decent quality and warranties. Let’s look at how it stands against Comfortmaker.:

Similarities

Ducane and Comfortmaker are brands of bigger companies. Their furnaces are built with quality components, and they lie on the more affordable side of the price spectrum.

Differences

Though their parts are of high quality, many Ducane furnace components are unique to them, so repairs can be delayed. It also falls behind in warranty as Comfortmaker offers comprehensive coverage over all products.

Day & Night vs. Comfortmaker Furnace

Day & Night belongs to the same parent company as Comfortmaker, ICP. Though these are quite similar, let’s see how they compare with each other.

Similarities

As we already mentioned, they have the same parent company, so the parts and construction are quite similar. Even the warranty they offer is comprehensive and has a no-hassle replacement clause. They are more affordable than competitive brands and promise good value for the money.

Differences

Day & Night sometimes has comparable units at a lower price point, making it the more affordable option between the two.

Comfortmaker Furnace Troubleshooting

We are impressed with how well Comfortmaker Furnaces perform. Overall, these mid-range units produce consistent and effective heat without being a burden on your energy bills. But since they are man-made machines, they too sometimes malfunction.

You might have the burner blow out unexpectedly, a dirty filter may be blocking the air supply, or the furnace won’t ignite at all.

Fortunately, each Comfortmaker furnace passes rigorous quality control before it is sent out for sale, so usually, the problems that users face are minor issues that can be resolved with simple troubleshooting. Let’s have a look at some common problems and their solution.

Comfortmaker Furnace Troubleshooting Codes

Comfortmaker furnace error codes display themselves in the form of LED flashes. Here is a guide showing you how to read the error codes on your furnace.

  • Code: LED flashes steadily.
  • Cause: Normal operation.
  • Solution: Your furnace is running smoothly without any issues.
  • Code: Two flashes.
  • Cause: Pressure switch is stuck or closed.
  • Solution: There is some obstruction in the pressure tubing. Clear it for normal operation.
  • Code: Three flashes.
  • Cause: Pressure switch is stuck on open. Alternatively, the manual ON/OFF switch could be on the off position.
  • Solution: Make sure that the vent size is proper. Also, see that the inducer motor is not defective. There could be excessive wind supply or a faulty pressure switch that needs changing. You can also check pressure tubing for obstruction or disconnection. There could be inadequate air supply or a restricted vent that needs resolving.
  • Code: Four flashes.
  • Cause: The limit switch is on.
  • Solution: Try tightening the loose blower wheel, remove vent restriction, if any, check the air filter as it might need replacing. The blower can be defective and needs replacement. You can also try to restrict the wind.
  • Code: Five flashes.
  • Cause: Flame is out of sequence.
  • Solution: The gas valve is either left open or is leaking. Check and react accordingly.

  • Solution: Call for service.

You should remember that troubleshooting these error codes requires you to work with components of high temperature and voltages. So, take the necessary precautions. And, it is always a good idea to call for help when you don’t feel up to it.

Comfortmaker Furnace Burner Goes Out When Blower Comes on

This usually happens when you have an open safety control. Try testing all your safety control with a voltmeter when the draft inducer is running. A weak connection may be giving out a false signal of open safety control, which prompts the control board to shut off the furnace.

It also happens when your gas valve does not get full 24 volts to open and light the flames. If that is the case, make sure it gets 24 volts; otherwise, it won’t open.

How to Fix Pressure Switch on Comfortmaker Furnace

A pressure switch is a safety device on your Comfortmaker furnace. When it senses negative pressure inside the burner box, it signals the control board to shut the system down. It can get stuck or fail sometimes. If this happens, look for the cause of negative pressure before checking it for electrical failure. If your pressure switch is faulty, you can always replace it.

How to Light a Comfortmaker Furnace Pilot

Lighting a Comfortmaker pilot is an issue every furnace owner has faced at some point. The struggle is not real, as it is much simpler than it actually looks.

Locate the switch that says on, off, and pilot, and turn it to pilot. Now, press the reset button and keep holding it down. Bring a fire close to the pilot to ignite it. Once you are sure that the pilot is stable, you can release the reset button. In fact, every model has its specific lighting instructions given on a label stuck somewhere on the furnace.

Comfortmaker Furnace Won’t Ignite

This can happen because of a number of reasons, including low fuel supply, dirty air filter, pilot or ignitor issues, or a faulty thermostat. You should check your fuel to see whether the furnace is getting enough. Clean or replace your dirty filter with a new one.

If the pilot is the culprit, you will need professional help, and if the ignitor is causing trouble, then gentle cleaning will resolve it. And if your thermostat is not communicating with the furnace, you should consider replacing it. If none of these steps have any effect, you should get a professional to have a look.

Comfortmaker Furnace Pressure Switch Stuck Open

The common reasons for the pressure switch getting stuck open are a faulty switch, loose pressure switch hose, or an obstructed chimney. The pressure switch tells whether the inducer motor is doing its job via the pressure hose. If the hose is loose or has cracks, it will send out an inaccurate reading, causing a stuck pressure switch.

The pressure switch stays open if the system cannot get rid of combustion gases. This happens because of an obstructed flue pipe. Clear out the debris to resolve the problem. A faulty switch can also cause problems. Try replacing it.

How to Clean a Flame Sensor on a Comfortmaker Furnace

A flame sensor is a simple device inside the burner assembly. It is a rod-like structure that sits in front of the flame stream inside the furnace and confirms that the flame is present. A dirty flame sensor does not let the furnace ignite. Here is how to clean it.

  1. Turn off the furnace and disconnect the power supply.

  2. The flame sensor in Comfortmaker furnaces usually mounts with a 1/4″ hex head screw. Just unscrew it, and the sensor will slide out.

  3. Take light-grit sandpaper or steel wool and gently rub the sensor with it.

  4. Use a clean paper towel to wipe off the grit.

  5. Remount the sensor on the burner assembly.

  6. Turn the furnace back on.
