Turning up the thermostat will cost more in energy bills. What you really need is a good space heater. A ceramic space heater will not only keep your heating bills lower; it will keep everyone in the room warm.

Ceramic space heaters are excellent for keeping a space in your house or office warm, whether on a chilly winter night or during early autumn cold. Ceramic heaters heat up the environment more efficiently than many alternatives.

How Ceramic Heaters Work

Ceramic heaters are coil-based units that utilize a fan to draw air through an individual conducting ceramic element. It then directs the warmer air outward into the room. Ceramic heaters work using a combination of ceramic plates and aluminum baffles to conduct heat that circulates warm air throughout the entire room.

The ceramic core is larger than the heating coil. Because of that, it can operate at a lower temperature, continuously releasing the same amount of energy over a larger area.  Though a ceramic heater provides a significant amount of heat, it remains cool to the touch.

When evaluating ceramic heaters, you may see the abbreviation “PTC”. PTC stands for Positive Temperature Coefficient. PTC ceramic material is semi-conductive, so when electricity enters the ceramic, power decreases quickly as it reaches the optimum temperature.

Ceramic heaters radiate heat in a specific direction. They may use reflectors to focus the heat, or not; some will allow the heat to dissipate in the direction they are facing.  Since the ceramic elements are always in contact with the aluminum fins, they heat the fins and a fan blowing across the fins heats the air.

If the current passing through the heater is higher and generates more heat than the device can send out into the environment, the device will heat up and resistance will increase. This limits the current. This feature makes the heaters quite efficient.

PTC Technology offers significant benefits that make them ideal for use in your space.  The most desirable feature is its safety.  When a PTC heater approaches its optimal operating temperature, electricity usage is automatically lowered. PTC heaters will not overheat.

Secondly, it remains operational to prevent freeze damage as a convection heater. When there is a sudden falling ambient temperature, the PTC heater will automatically increase its heating power to replace the heat loss.

How Much Heat Can A Ceramic Heater Give Off?

Ceramic heaters heat up quickly and provide excellent levels of comfort.

From the cheapest to the more expensive ones, ceramic heaters will come with an adjustable thermostat with three or more settings: 1500-watts can provide around 5,000 BTUs of heat, 900-watts can provide around 3,000 BTUs of heat and a fan-only option. Most heaters include automatic overheat protection too.

The Good and the Bad

Ceramic heaters offer many advantages. Let’s look at some of them.

The ceramic heater operates at a lower temperature than some common household items, making it quite safe. The ceramic heating element self-regulates the heat output in case the air inlet is blocked. The cool-touch cabinets also provide additional safety around children and pets.

Consistent Space Heating

Ceramic heaters provide efficient background heat while still retaining abilities for directional spot heating. The fan will distribute the produced heat throughout the room evenly, while models with the oscillation function distribute directional heat over an even larger area.

Most of the ceramic space heaters come with a dual power setting of 900 watts and 1500 watts. The low setting will result in comfortably high temperature.

Like any other device, though, ceramic heaters will have some drawbacks.

They may be quite dusty

Dust may accumulate in the ceramic heaters because they have small passages in the heating elements that air must pass through.

While distributing the heat well, the fan may produce quite some noise.

Ceramic heaters are intended to heat people in their line of sight instead of entire spaces. They do not manage to heat up a very large room; they aren't designed for that. They will warm your smaller rooms or office quite efficiently.

Basic Guidelines To Follow To Ensure Safety

You must always consider the safety of the ceramic heaters. If you are planning to buy a ceramic space heater, be sure you follow these basic guidelines.

  • Always use the newer models of heaters that come with the upgraded safety features.
  • The heater should have a safety label from a recognized authority like UL, ETL, or CSA.
  • Pick a heater that is the right size for the space you plan to heat.
  • Prevent the heater from tipping over by keeping the heater on a flat, even surface.
  • Spend a little extra to get a heater with safety features such as auto overheat protection, a cool-touch exterior, a self-regulating ceramic element or a tip-over safety switch.
  • Be sure to read and follow the manufacturer's directions before using the heater.
  • Do not leave heaters running continuously without supervision.
  • Always keep flammable items at least three feet from the heater.
  • Be sure the heater's plug is tightly secured to the wall socket.
  • Don’t hide the heater's cord under carpeting or rugs or use them with extension cords.
  • Always keep electric heaters far from water, children and pets.
